TESCO Announces Acquisition of Nighthawk Adaptiv™ Product Line

Cellular and fiber AMI solution provides zero-infrastructure offering

BRISTOL, Penn June 10, 2022 The Eastern Specialty Company (TESCO) is pleased to announce effective today it will take over the Nighthawk Adaptiv™ family of products, offering uninterrupted support of Nighthawk customers.

The Nighthawk Adaptiv cellular and fiber advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution provides a zero-infrastructure offering. This is particularly helpful for larger, investor-owned utilities to leverage their private, long-term evolution networks for next-generation AMI needs. This also benefits cooperatives wanting to leverage their fiber networks for the same purpose and for smaller municipal and cooperative utilities wanting to enter the AMI market.

“We are pleased this transition will help our Nighthawk customers continue to receive the support they have come to expect from our operation,” said Brad Kitterman, CEO of AMI Solutions, LLC, whose team supports the Nighthawk Adaptiv line of products. “We are very pleased with the level of commitment already demonstrated by TESCO toward the ongoing deployment and support of these products, reaffirming our decision to entrust our customers in their hands.”

Tom Lawton, President and CEO of TESCO, is similarly enthusiastic, stating, “The AMI Solutions’ engineering team is second to none. Working together to serve the Nighthawk Adaptiv customers has been a great experience and a relatively seamless transition. Adding the Nighthawk AMI solution to our existing portfolio of products and services will help us continue to achieve our mission of becoming the primary outside metering resource to our electric utility customers.”

TESCO’s Hot Socket Paper Is Published

TESCO’s paper on “Forensic Identification and Root Causes of Hot Socket Problems Found in Electrical Meters” has been published in the Journal of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers.

Electric meters play a critical role in electric utility distribution systems, especially for residential customers. Because it occurs so infrequently, forensic engineers may not recognize a dangerous condition within these meters known as a “hot socket.” This condition exists where the meter blades make insufficient electrical contact with the socket jaws.  This paper reviews methods for forensically examining, diagnosing, and explaining the hot socket phenomenon while exploring smart meters’ incident trends.

I have seen a number of companies that may not want to remain reliant on decades old legacy systems but are hesitant to make  the investment in newer software platforms because of cost uncertainty, risk, and the presumed  level of effort. Utilities are great at finding creative ways to extend the life of existing systems and have always been very successful at developing point solutions for various business needs. Some examples are billing, procurements, work order, asset and inventory management. Other systems may have been developed or added to supplement the functionality of legacy systems that may no longer be capable of performing the heavy lifting  required to feed the increasing needs of the enterprise for data and information. In addition, outdated programming (more…)

Looking back
Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) introduced the first electrical distribution systems for lighting using direct current. He believed that electricity should be sold just like gas. His ‘electric meter’, patented in 1881, used the  electrochemical effect of current to measure consumption. Over the next couple of decades, with contributions from scientists and entrepreneurs around the globe, he made several key enhancements and innovations that  birthed the utility industry. The mechanical meters as we know them today are induction meters that were introduced into the marketplace in 1914. These meters are also known as Ferraris meters (based on the principles of  the Bláthy meter – Titusz Bláthy (1860-1939). Fast forward 60 years or so and the next big advancement in the industry came with the advancement in analogue and digital integrated circuits. Through the years utility (more…)
