TOOL AND DIE MAKERS

Overview:

You will analyze tooling and process-related problems in Tooling, Assembly Fixtures, Dies and CNC Machines in this position. This person will also aid in the setup in establishing proper auxiliary equipment setups, machine processing settings on a die or fixture, and assembly tooling set up. Skilled in machining prototypes and low quantity custom parts. CNC skills a plus

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to company quality policy
  • Follow all company & area safety procedures
  • Lays out work assignments of all complexity levels utilizing verbal instructions, rough sketches, tooling, and product prints and visualizes finished product
  • Computes dimensions, establishes reference points, centerlines, and guidelines on tooling and product and measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining purposes
  • Determines necessary machine operations and setups and operates precision machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders to machine parts and verifies conformance to print specifications
  • Fits and assembles completed components into integral unit or mechanism and verifies dimensions, alignment, and clearances. Stones, grinds, laps, polishes, or performs other smoothing or blending techniques to enable parts to fit correctly. Occasionally uses shims to correct improper fit and alignment of parts
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical devices and machinery to ensure production requirements deliver on-time delivery of defect-free products. Consults with engineering to improve design, function, and efficiency of use to reduce manufacturing costs through continuous improvement
  • Close interaction with engineering to implement tooling changes and modifications to improve design, function, and efficiency of problem tools, dies, fixtures and manual/automated assembly machines.
  • Ability to design and fabricate jigs, fixtures, and gages to hold, measure, and assemble finished products. Able to exercise a high degree of ingenuity to do unusual or difficult work with limited supervision.
  • Working knowledge of Hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems to include vision systems and die safety sensors a plus
  • Utilizes precision measuring instruments, devices, work holding fixtures, and related hand tools to fabricate and inspect tooling conformance to required print specifications.
  • Working knowledge of material properties to fabricate, harden, temper, stress relieve and anneal all types of tool steel and the ability to test results using hardness tester to check Rockwell or Brinell hardness.
  • Required to mentor, instruct, lead, and train apprentices, trainees, and other employees in lesser classifications.
  • You must perform any other ethical duties and assignments as directed by the Machine Shop Manager.
  • Strong organizational skills, reliability, and attention to detail are crucial for success in this position.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Overall solid operational knowledge of precision tool room equipment, including form grinding, intricate tooling details to print specifications of +/-.0002 on all types of tool steels
  • Strong analytical skills acquired through a minimum of 5 years tool room experience gained through a formal apprenticeship or trade school
  • Able to interpret and work from all tooling prints, sketches, verbal instructions, and related documentation. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Multi-station metalworking dies, complex mechanical devices applying knowledge of tooling and die design, and construction to include layout, fabrication, assembly, and conditioning procedures
  • Repair and build small dies, CNC fixtures and assembly fixtures
  • Set-up and operate all machine tools in a tool room environment including but not limited to, conventional mills, lathes, drill presses, saws, and grinders, CNC a plus
  • Does highly skilled fitting, adjusting and timing
  • Maintains, modifies, or improves fixtures as they needed
  • Make new and custom tooling when necessary
  • Make parts or protypes for our products
  • Flexible and able to work in a fast paced environment when needed

Experience

  • At least 6 years of Tool & Die experience.
